Introduction

Although I am a career counselor, I was never able to read a career book from cover to cover. The usual steps to career success overwhelm me. When I experienced my own career transition, I needed to write my own script. As I weaned myself from a work situation that I had outgrown, my daughter was about to set off for college. I was determined to set a good example for my daughter as I made my next career move, so that she wouldn’t burn out as I did, by driving in the fast lane.

To discover what lifework success means to me, I painfully embarked upon a “slow<backward” journey. I reflected upon my maternal family history, my work and home transitions, and my relationship with my family.

My work life was in flux and my personal life was out of control. I needed to reverse my fast>forward track and take time out for a life check-up. I was tired of being  “superwoman” for the past thirty years, struggling to break through the glass ceiling, at the same time serving as an ever-supportive wife and mother.

I asked myself, “What do I want out of life? Is the quality of my life improving or degenerating? What kind of example am I setting for my daughter?
